In 2002, the Leadville Trail 100 created the Legacy as its nonprofit foundation to formalize a pathway to meet ever increasing community needs. The Legacy fund continues to grow through generous contributions from individuals and corporations, as well as a portion of race entry fees. Since the foundation’s inception, over $100,000 has been contributed with every dollar spent going directly to meet the needs of the Leadville / Lake County community.

These generous contributions make it possible for the Leadville Trail 100 to support such efforts as the Community Park, the SnoCat Groomer for Leadville’s Mineral Belt Trail and Youth Basketball in Lake County to name a few. Of course, no recipients are more gratefully excited than the Leadville children who receive gifts from Santa during the Legacy’s Annual Children’s Christmas Party. The joy these children express when opening that special present from Santa is unforgettable!

Last year, the Leadville Trail 100 Legacy Scholarship Program was started. In May 2009, the Legacy distributed a $1,000 scholarship to all graduating Lake County High School seniors who were going forward with some form of higher education. A total of $26,000 in scholarships was awarded to LCHS graduation seniors during Class Day on May 21.

"When we started the Leadville Trail 100 twenty-seven years ago, our singular purpose was for the Leadville community to benefit financially from the races. That goal continues to be met by assisting local businesses with today’s economic hardships by bringing people into town," says LT100 President Ken Chlouber. "On the other side of that equation is the Legacy which speaks to tomorrow's challenges through education. Some of Lake County's greatest assets are coming out of that high school. These scholarships will help students reach their true potential."

The Legacy Scholarship Program is making that dream a reality for many Lake County students. It says, you're better than you think you are and can do more than you think you can!"

"Class day was a great inspiration for the Legacy," says Merilee Maupin, LT100 Race Director. "It was fantastic to share in the seniors' special celebration and to help 26 graduates fulfill their dreams to continue with their studies."

The Leadville Trail 100 Legacy is funded through generous contributions from the LT100 runners, bikers, and crew. Anyone interested in making a tax-deductible donation to the Legacy can contact us here.
